SCOPE OF SERVICES PROVIDED
  • $106.8 million (2004) funded through Head Start for Kentucky's low income children & families
  • 33 Head Start Programs serving Kentucky's preschool age children
  • 12 Early Head Start Programs serving 0-3 year-olds and pregnant women
  • 470 Head Start Centers with 1,143 classrooms operated by Head Start and Early Head Start
  • Head Start provided in all 120 counties of Kentucky
  • 16,481 children and families served by Head Start and Early Head Start
  • 3,527 staff employed directly by Head Start and Early Head Start - of these nearly 1/3 are former or current Head Start and Early Head Start parents
  • Migrant Head Start programs developing with more needed

SERVICES PROVIDED TO CHILDREN

  • Up-to-date on preventative and primary health care
  • Up-to-date on age-appropriate immunizations
  • Professional dental exams, preventative dental care, dental treatments, and diagnosis of the need for further dental treatment
  • Consultations with mental health professionals for behavior and/or mental health issues
  • Determination of disabilities

FAMILY SERVICES PROVIDED TO ENCOURAGE FAMILY SELF-SUFFICIENCY

  • Head Start families were enrolled in adult education (GED classes, college courses, etc.)
  • Job training
  • Emergency/crisis intervention concerning food, shelter and clothing
  • Mental health services
  • Substance abuse prevention assistance or treatment
  • Child abuse and neglect services
  • Health education (including prenatal classes)
